The SX OS CFW and the Atmosphere Switch CFW, what are their differences? Which can support playing game backups on the Nintendo Switch V5.1.0 and should we buy the SX Pro to install OS CFW or wait for the Switch Atmosphère? You can find answers here.
Nintendo Switch CFW
Custom firmware, if you’ve never heard the term before, is essentially a series of patches that are applied to the original firmware on boot. It can also refer to an entirely new firmware in some cases, but in most cases it’s simply a modified original firmware. The official operating system of the Switch is Horizon. A custom firmware would be a modified version of the software that adds new features not officially supported by Nintendo. Examples include the ability to backup and load games, saves, and run homebrew applications.
For now, Switch CFW includes the following two ones, SX OS and Atmosphere-NS. They are both based upon the Fuse Gelee exploit. Fusee Gelee is the main unpatchablebootrom exploit for any firmware on any region console. It has been used to boot Linux, launch primitive CFW and running the HBL (via Hekate), and more on Nintendo Switch.
Xecuter SX OS
SX OS is a commercial Nintendo Switch CFW, it is developed by the Team Xecuter and will be released by them in the middle of this month too. The OS CFW supports hacking Nintendo Switch V5.1.0 and working on any region Switch console. It has a lot of functions, such as playing Switch game backups, running Homebrew emulators and softwares, enabling AutoRCM feature and so on.
In short, Xecuter SX OS is a charged Nintendo Switch CFW, but it can support you play free Switch games on any firmware version of console.
Atmosphère-NS is a Nintendo Switch CFW too. But it is totally free because it doesn’t have functions like supporting “Piracy”. It is currently being developed and maintained by Team ReSwitched, SciresM, TuxSH and hexkyz. It’s not released yet, SciresM has previously said Atmosphere will be usable for end users by Summer this year. Think of it as a similar CFW to what Luma was on the 3DS; a series of improvements and enhancements that will allow both a ton of customization as well as some new useful features.
For short, Atmosphère is a free Nintendo Switch CFW to use but doesn’t support Pirating Games.

Which is better, Atmosphere or Team Xecuter OS?
If your simple need is to play free Switch games on your console, without any doubt, the SX OS is the CFW you should install. However, for getting it onto your console, the more convenient way is to buy the SX Pro kit, it includes a USB Dongle comes with the OS license code, and a jig for modifying Switch to RCM mode.
As to the Atmosphere, it is open source and community developed. This means everyone is able to see the code, improve it, add features, and so on. There is public documentation to allow for development of other more futures. So if you don’t care about Piracy, just want to get homebrews and other hacks on your console, choose the Atmosphere.
Will you get banned for using SX or Atmosphere-NS on Switch?
Team Xecurter FAQ
Q: There has been a wave of bans happening lately. Does that confirm we won’t be able to play online with SX OS?
A: There have indeed been a number of isolated ban incidents happening lately among some homebrew developers. The exact cause of these bans is not known as of yet. We are not aware of any bans due to SX OS usage. But be cautious and use online functionality at your own risk!
Nintendo has already banned some consoles, but what exactly is triggering the van is unknown. At first it was believed that crash/bug logs might be the cause, but the latest update states it may be caused by downloading games from the Nintendo eShop using third party tools. So don’t play online when you use any one of them. Then you won’t put yourself in risk.
